No this would not cause a significant loss in gas mileage. The car over heating is not normal either. You need to replace your antifreeze with a 50/50 blend of Toyota red antifreeze and distilled water at the same time replace your thermostat and see if the over heating problem stops. If not you need your radiator taken out and sent to a shop for repair. Also make sure your cooling fan is operating properly.
